Options for Operators

Premium is rent. Marks are weather. Process is the grade.

Educational only. Not investment advice. Fictional names. No live broker and no real account.

Chapter 8: Pantheon Contrast + Module Checkpoint

Options for Operators · Chapter 8 Big idea: Different masters use options for different jobs. Copy the job, not the cosplay.

Educational only. Not personalized investment advice.

You now have anatomy, pricing, Greeks, vol, a strategy map, and assignment reality. Before Module 3's practical overlay, calibrate style.

People who "use options" are not one tribe.

Style cards

Edward Thorp — quantify the edge

Math, arbitrage, warrant hedging, risk control. Emotion is not a strategy. If you cannot measure edge, you are not Thorp by wearing a Greek letter.

Borrow: size and process. Do not borrow: pretend you have Medallion's data room.

Taleb / tail tradition — cheap convexity

Barbell: mostly safe, some high-convexity bets. Long OTM puts as crash insurance when the world is fragile and premium is mispriced relative to ruin.

P07 Protective / insurance spirit

Borrow: respect for ruin and left tails. Do not borrow: permanent fear theater without a portfolio design.

Natenberg / McMillan — technical literacy

Textbooks of volatility and strategic use. The adult vocabulary of the desk.

Borrow: precision of language. Do not borrow: vocabulary as status.

Sosnoff / high-probability premium selling

Retail education around selling premium, defined risk, and mechanics. High win-rate marketing lives nearby.

Borrow: mechanics practice and defined-risk preference. Do not borrow: win-rate as a substitute for willing-buy/sell discipline.

Howard Marks — second-level thinking

Risk as permanent loss of capital and the failure of consensus. Options are tools inside that philosophy, not the philosophy itself.

Borrow: "what does the other side believe?" Do not borrow: cleverness for its own sake.

Buffett / Berkshire — paid to wait, rarely

Warren Buffett, who built Berkshire Hathaway, is the patient owner in this pantheon. He sold puts only a few times, at prices he would gladly pay: Coca-Cola in 1993 and Burlington Northern Santa Fe in 2008. He took assignment as part of the plan and concluded that he was usually better off just buying the stock. He does not cap the upside on businesses he means to hold forever. The full case file is in Chapter 10.

Borrow: willing-buyer strikes, full cash, never forced to sell. Do not borrow: the $37 billion index-put book — that was insurance underwriting at a scale you don't have.

Investco operator (this course default) — willing both sides

P06 Covered call

Options as income + allocation overlay on stock decisions. Marks are weather. Partial cover. Cash-secured puts only as paid entry. Far-OTM harvest and early BTC as process — not a separate options career.

This is the persona Module 3 trains.

Vol bets are a different church

P11 Long straddle

Long vol (straddle) is not "willing both sides overlay." It is a storm ticket. Keep it in literacy unless your written OS explicitly allows a small convexity sleeve (Taleb-adjacent) with strict size.

Module checkpoint (what you should be able to do)

By now you should:

  1. Decode a contract and capital at risk.
  2. Use Pricer vs Greeks tabs correctly.
  3. Read delta/theta/vega in operator sentences.
  4. Explain IV vs HV and skew at a basic level.
  5. Name core four and reject naked call income.
  6. Walk assignment paths for CC and CSP.
  7. State which pantheon style is not yours.

If any line fails, re-read that chapter before Module 3.

Module exam (teacher-administered)

See the Chapter 8 module exam (given by your teacher) — mechanics, chart reading, ethics, style ID. No live trading required.

Takeaways

  1. Style is a job description, not a costume.
  2. Default persona: overlay operator.
  3. Tail insurance and pure vol are optional sleeves with explicit rules.
  4. Module 3 turns doctrine into tickets and an OS.

Next: the willing-both-sides overlay — your book policy.

Homework

Chapter 8 Homework — Pantheon (16 pts) + exam prep

  1. (4) Match: Thorp / Taleb / Sosnoff-style / overlay operator — one hallmark each.
  2. (3) Name one trade that fits Taleb and one that violates him.
  3. (3) Why is this course's default not "high probability premium seller"?
  4. (3) List five skills required before Module 3 (from checkpoint list).
  5. (3) Reflection: which style are you most tempted to cosplay, and what boundary stops you?

(Module exam is separate, given by your teacher.)

Lab

Lab #8 — Style Card

Chapter 8 Time: 35–50 minutes Educational only

Goal

Pick a persona; design fit and violate trades (paper).

Tasks

  1. Choose: Thorp / Taleb / premium-seller / Marks / overlay operator.
  2. Design 2 paper trades that fit the style (structure + why).
  3. Design 2 that violate it (and why).
  4. One paragraph: which style is closest to your Module 3 OS?

Deliverable

One-page style card.
