Chapter 7: Buyers, Sellers, and Assignment Reality
Options for Operators · Chapter 7 Big idea: Short options are jobs with delivery risk. Long options are insurance or leverage with a fuse.
Educational only. Not personalized investment advice.
Paper P&L is not the whole story. Options can deliver stock obligations.
Exercise vs assignment
- Exercise — the long holder uses the right (buy stock via call, sell stock via put).
- Assignment — the short holder is chosen to fulfill that obligation.
American equity options can often be exercised early. Most retail life is about expiration and the days around it — but dividends on short calls are a classic early-exercise path. Do not assume "it never happens early."
Short call assignment
If you are short a call and assigned, you sell 100 shares per contract at the strike.
- Covered: you deliver shares you own. That can be success if the strike was your happy-sell price (plus credit kept).
- Naked: you may be short stock after assignment — a different animal, and why this course bans naked call income cosplay.

Assignment on a covered call is often the happy path for a willing seller — not a failure.
Short put assignment
If you are short a put and assigned, you buy 100 shares per contract at the strike. Cash-secured means the cash was waiting.

Effective entry ≈ strike − premium received (per share). If that entry was not pre-approved in your head, you sold entertainment.
"I'll just roll forever"
Rolling = close current short + open a later/farther strike short. Sometimes rational. Often a way to avoid admitting the original strike test failed.
Rule: roll only with a new DecisionLog. Same thesis? New strike still willing? Capital still sized? If not, take the assignment or close and stop.
LEAPs: two different jobs
- Long LEAP call as stock substitute — capital-light upside with fuse and decay. Advanced use; easy to overpay for extrinsic.
- Short LEAP call against stock (LEAP covered call) — sell time at a true happy-sell price when near-term far-OTM premium is noise (Investco-style harvest lesson). Caps the shares for a long time — only if you are truly willing across that window.

Same geometry. Different calendar and capital story.
Cash-secured vs margin
Cash-secured put: full cash set aside. Clean. Margin-secured: broker lets you post less — leverage by another name. Portfolio margin is adult supervision, not a free upgrade for high school or early operator books. If you cannot explain the deficit in sleep terms, do not use it.
IRA note (high level): many IRAs allow cash-secured puts and covered calls with restrictions; they do not magically erase obligation logic. Tax on assignment inside an IRA is usually not the event — thesis and sizing are.
Tax sketch (not CPA advice)
- Premiums and capital gains can be messy across years.
- Wash sales can apply when options and stock interact.
- Qualified covered calls have IRS definitions that affect holding periods.
Advanced Finance tax week is the bridge. Here: do not let tax theater drive a bad strike. Consult a professional when real money meets real forms.
Decision tree (short premium)
Short call still OTM?
yes → hold / early BTC per policy / roll only with log
no (ITM / assignment path)
still willing seller at strike+credit? → accept assign or manage deliberately
not willing? → you sold the wrong strike; fix process, not just the ticket
Short put still OTM?
yes → hold / early BTC if policy hits
no
still willing buyer at strike−credit? → assign is success of the plan
not willing? → process failureSee Through It: pin risk and lottery expiration
Near expiration near the strike, small moves flip intrinsic on/off. Short premium near the pin is drama, not free theta. If you need free money that badly, your rails are wrong.
Takeaways
- Assignment delivers stock obligations — plan for it.
- Covered call assignment can be success for willing sellers.
- CSP assignment is paid entry for willing buyers.
- Rolling needs a new decision, not a reflex.
- LEAPs are long-duration tools, not magic.
- Cash-secured > margin cosplay for this course.

Lab
Lab #7 — Assignment Decision Tree
Chapter 7 Time: 35–50 minutes Educational only
Goal
Walk assignment paths.
Tasks
- Draw or write the Ch7 decision tree for short call and short put.
- Scenario A: Short CC, stock rips through strike, still willing seller — what do you do?
- Scenario B: Short CSP, stock collapses, you are NOT willing buyer — what process failed?
- Scenario C: Propose a roll that includes a new DecisionLog (fill template).
Deliverable
Tree + A/B/C answers.
